After a week of work I felt like getting out, eating some good food and enjoying some fresh air. James and I decided on a breakfast date at the Early Bird Cafe which I have wanted to try for ages.
Based on Woodville Road in Cathays, I was pleasantly surprised to find that parking nearby was really easy on the Sunday morning that we chose to visit. The cafe was already super busy when we got there around 10:30am; we were lucky as we were able to grab the last free table before it got really busy.
Surprisingly, I decided against the ever insta worthy smashed ‘avo toast’ combo. I wasn’t really feeling it at the time and instead opted for the ‘Cowboy’ which consisted of homemade BBQ baked beans and welsh sausage on a bed of sour dough toast. It did not disappoint, in fact, it was pretty lush. The poached egg that topped it was perfect and the beans were sweet and tangy.
James went for the full English breakfast but declared it ‘okay’. It looked lovely but I think he begrudged paying over £8.00 for a breakfast that came with not quite warm bacon and one sausage. I was happy though because I got to eat his mushrooms!
By the time we had finished eating, it was quite busy. A few families had come in and were told that they would need to wait for a table. I had been planning on buying some baked goods from the till area because they looked amazing but I was stuffed at this point and decided against it.
We decided to walk off our brunch by going for a stroll around Roath Lake. I hadn’t walked around this area since my student days so it was nice to revisit and take everything in. Especially because it was such a gorgeous day.
Early Bird Cafe is a repeat vendor of the Cardiff Street Food circus. Their mini doughnuts are the stuff of dreams and I’m glad that I finally got around to visiting their cafe. Maybe next time I’ll grab an extra bag of doughnuts to take out as well.
